AN inter-school sports quiz is taking place next month, with top prizes for the winning team.

The Basingstoke Schools Sports Quiz Competition will be held in the hall at Basingstoke College of Technoology (BCoT) on Saturday, December 6.

The event, organised by Rotary Sport, invites two teams of four from each secondary school in Basingstoke to attend, with a chance to win prizes in the festive period.

The quiz, which will begin at 11am, will test the knowledge of school teams in sporting matters, past and present, across all disciplines.

Organiser and president of Rotary Sport, Dr Tunde Adelakun, said: "The realisation of a sports quiz for Basingstoke schools fills me with a lot of excitement. As a matter of fact, all members of the club are looking forward to it.

"I guess it’s because it enables us to act out the fulfilment of one of the primary objectives behind the establishment of Rotary Sport. For me, it is to foster and encourage the growth of a sports community around the world that is not only fixated on medals, titles and championships but also on knowledge."

The event is the second the group has hosted this year, following a sports festival in July, which culminated in a quiz.

Dr Tunde explained that the group wanted to host another, separate quiz event due to the popularity of the first.

The group aims to encourage camaraderie and healthy competition in youngsters in the community, while offering them a free activity during the build-up to Christmas.

He continued: "To use this quiz to test the knowledge of our youngsters in sport, to encourage them to know more about the sports they love to follow and also promote camaraderie amongst the student community in Basingstoke is just an awesome opportunity, and this quiz offers it.

"Schools benefit. Through our prize system, individual team members will benefit. And the entire community of Basingstoke will tend to benefit through sport.

"By extension, we believe that the Rotary family will also grow when the outside world sees what we are doing using the power of sport."
