A construction group has paid tribute to a man who died after sustaining fatal injuries at an AWE site.

A 58-year-old male construction worker from East London died after sustaining fatal injuries on July 6 2023, under the supervision of Balfour Beatty Group Limited at AWE’s Aldermaston site in West Berkshire.

On October 22, it was announced that Balfour Beatty Group Limited will be prosecuted for a health and safety offence that was a conventional matter with no radiological risk to the public.

A spokesperson for Balfour Beatty said: “We acknowledge the findings of the Office for Nuclear Regulation investigation, published today, and it is with great sadness that we look back on the tragic events of July 2023.

“Our heartfelt thoughts remain with our colleague’s family, friends and co-workers.

“The health and safety of our workforce will always be our primary concern. As legal proceedings have now commenced, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

The decision to begin legal proceedings follows an investigation into the incident by The Office for Nuclear Regulation, the UK’s independent nuclear regulator.

The prosecution relates to alleged breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, section 2.1, which states every employer should ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees, and section 3.1, which states that people not under employment who may be affected are not exposed to risks to their health or safety.
