The re-opening date for the Basingstoke ice rink has been delayed, after it initially announced an expected opening date of early September.

Phase 1 of the refurbished Planet Ice was set to open on September 1, but it has been delayed due to ‘unforeseen adjustments in the construction schedule,’ with a public reopening date yet to be announced.

The rink, which has been closed since November 2024, will now hold its first home game for Basingstoke Bison on September 20.

Planet Ice’s website reads: “We recognise that this news may be disappointing for our customers, just as it is for the dedicated team onsite who have worked hard to meet the original September 1st target.

“It’s important to emphasise that this delay is expected to be short, the rink will still open ahead of the start of the hockey season.”

The delay means Basingstoke Bison’s pre-season games on September 5 against Swindon and September 14 against Bristol have been relocated from the Basingstoke rink.

Basingstoke Bison said: “We are working closely with Planet Ice to ensure a smooth transition back to our home rink once the refurbishment is complete, and we look forward to welcoming fans back to Basingstoke very soon.”

Once reopened, the rink will be available for all forms of ice sports training, but areas including the main reception and downstairs servery will be closed for phase two refurbishment, which is expected to be completed ahead of the October half-term.

Planet Ice has reminded the public that attempting to access the building to take photographs is strictly discouraged.
