England have reached the semi-final of Euro 2024.

It's been a nail-biting few weeks in Germany, but after winning beautifully on penalties against Switzerland, England take on the Netherlands on Wednesday, July 10.

We've looked back through our archives to see how Basingstoke celebrated the Euros over the years.

In our hunt, we found some brilliant photos from 2004, which can be found in the gallery above.

Imagine the scenes, it's June 13, 2004, and England is playing against France in Portugal. It's one of the first matches of the group stages.

Fans in Basingstoke flocked to local pubs to watch the drama unfold in the first-round qualifying match.

Frank Lampard gave England hope with a goal in the 38th minute after responding to David Beckham's free-kick.

But it was not meant to be. Zinedine Zidane scored a free-kick and a penalty in injury time to secure France the victory.

Despite the 2:1 loss, England made it through the group stages to the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, that was where England's Euro 2004 ended after losing to Portugal during penalties.

Take a look at the gallery above to see all the photos. If you're wondering what the circles are for, the photos were used in a competition the Gazette ran at the time called 'Face in the Crowd'.
