A petition calling for a ‘very dangerous’ route which links two residential roads to be blocked off to cars has closed with just a handful of signatures.

Southampton City Council received the e-petition about the access point between Scott Road and Bacon Close in Weston.

The petition ran for more than five months but closed on April 30 with the backing of four people.

It read: “The access between Scott Road and Bacon Close is used regularly for access to the estate, but people could easily use the Wallace Road entrance.

“People absolutely fly through Scott Road at high speeds and it’s very dangerous. This will not change with the introduction of the 20mph limit.”

The resident who submitted the campaign said there had been two serious road incidents in the area in the months leading up to them filing the petition.

They said it was a regular walking route for children and it was also an area where youngsters played in the street.

The petition concluded: “There is absolutely no need for that small access road, please block it off.”

It was suggested that a bollard should be installed to block off the cut-through to cars.

Daily Echo: Woolston Labour Warwick PayneLong-serving Woolston ward councillor Warwick Payne said the stretch in question was originally a service road which remained in place after the area was developed.

He told the LDRS that from his time representing the area he had found the community was split on whether it should be blocked off.

“There are some residents who would love to see it close and there are other residents who would be opposed to it closing,” Cllr Payne said.

“There is a lack of consensus about what to do about it.

“If it is going to be used by motorists, they need to do so very slowly and safely.”
