Police have issued a statement after "increased police presence" around a Southampton park.

Officers shared the statement online explaining the increased police presence in and around the Riverside Park area as they respond to a "recent incident".

The statement reads that the force would like to reassure everyone there is "no immediate physical threat to the public" and people have been asked to approach officers if they need assistance.

Witnesses have described hearing the police helicopter flying over the area since around 5pm.

No more information has been provided on the nature of the incident.

The statement read: "There is currently an increased police presence in and around the Riverside Park area as we respond to a recent incident.

"We would like to reassure everyone that there is no immediate physical threat to the public. Feel free to approach any of our officers if you need assistance."
