A MINIATURE steam gala will be held in Basingstoke offering visitors the chance to ride trains, play games and see steam vehicles.

Basingstoke and District Model Engineering Society (BDMES) will host the annual event at Viables Craft Centre, on April 13 and April 14, between 10am and 4.30pm.

The gala will feature traction engines, steam and electric train rides, a garden railway, and a tombola. Entrance is free, with a charge of £2 for two train track laps.

Mike Lowe, a member of the society, said he is looking forward to the event.

He added: "If the weather is good, which hopefully it will be, we have a huge turnout throughout the course of the day."

Mike explained that the society makes most of its money offering train rides to the public, which is then used to run further events.

The miniature steam gala was first held in April 2011, with the group starting the event to 'show model traction engines, road vehicles and similar models in steam, operating in the open air'.

After receiving hundreds of visitors at the inaugural gala, as well as Traction engines from across the UK joining in, the group decided to hold the event annually.

Refreshments will be available from the Viables Craft Centre, which hosts a variety of independent businesses including a tea room, a sweet shop, and a cake shop.

BDMES was founded in 1976 to provide a friendly club atmosphere for people interested in maintaining and preserving Britain's industrial heritage by capturing it in miniature form.
