It is "too early" to say how long Devizes Road will be closed, according to SGN.

The road was closed suddenly just off St Paul's Roundabout late last night due to what Wiltshire Council described as a "major gas leak", and warned the road may be closed for a few days.

Now gas company SGN has said its engineers will be working through the night to carry out repairs and that it does not know when work will be completed.

Bradley Barlow, spokesperson for gas distribution company SGN, said: "Our engineers are currently attending a gas escape on Devizes Road in Salisbury, where gas readings have been found in two properties on either side of the road.

"The gas readings are at a safe level for residents to remain in their homes and are being closely monitored by our team, who will remain on site and will be working through the night to carry out repairs.

"For everyone’s safety, we temporarily closed Devizes Road in the early hours of this morning due to the road being too narrow to safely provide access past our works under two-way lights."

Mr Barlow added that it is too early to say how long the repair will take and that SGN will provide updates on its website as work progresses.
