WORK is underway at a Basingstoke heritage site to restore it for future years.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has started restoration work at the Holy Ghost ruins, in South View, which will include removing vegetation from on and around the structure along with stone repair and replacement, mortar repairs and cleaning.
Scaffolding has been installed around the ruins before work is carried out by specialist contractor Traditional Stone with support from heritage expert Oxley Conservation.

Fencing and a contractor’s office as well as storage space have also been set up.
The project also includes restoration work at Bolton Arch, at the entrance to Crabtree Plantation.
The main work at the Holy Ghost is expected to start later in the spring.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s cabinet member for sports, leisure and culture Cllr Kerry Morrow said: “We are lucky to have a number of important and fascinating heritage sites across the borough and it is so important that we do everything we can to protect them.
"Bolton Arch and the Chapel of the Holy Ghost are well-known and much-loved borough landmarks and this work will help to ensure that they are enjoyed by residents and visitors in the future."
