EASTROP park, roundabouts and Festival Place are among the artistic designs made by students from a college in Basingstoke as part of a project to brighten up the town centre.

As previously reported, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has been working with artists to brighten Top of Town with a trail of colourful artwork, as part of its Streets Alive project.

Students from Queen Mary's College, studying the Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma in art and design, have created designs for the final bench in Winchester Street, in the Top of Town, which needs to be transformed.

Their designs were showcased to the public as part of a special exhibition at Proteus Creation Space, with the public encouraged to vote for their favourite design.

A Gazette reporter attended the exhibition and spoke to the students behind the exhibition.

Eighteen-year-old AJ Johnson, who likes spending time at the Dice Tower, a gaming café in Basingstoke, which inspired her Snakes and Ladders board game design.

She said her ideas were all based on board games she loved to play as a child. She told the Gazette she used to play Snakes and Ladders with her nan on the panto when she was a child and she wanted to take inspiration from that.

She said: "If I won it would be cool to actually go and sit on the bench and actually play the game with my friend."

Each square on the board has an image of something recognisable in Basingstoke including All Saints Church and the bandstand in War Memorial Park.

She said she wanted to make something that was actually playable if it was put on the bench.

Wiktoria Kuta used Photoshop to create recognisable images of Basingstoke including Festival Place, War Memorial Park and Black Dam Ponds.

She said: "I chose to add in pink throughout because it is very pretty and it creates a nice aura."

Meanwhile, Sofia Williams chose to do her designs on roundabouts in Basingstoke.

Other students used paints to create their finished artwork including Lara Ozyurt who used oil paint and markers to produce an autumn-themed creation.

The 17-year-old who wants to study fine art at university said centered her artwork around Eastrop Park and told the Gazette she added in orange leaves to create an autumn feel.

The winning design will be painted by the students this spring on to the bench opposite Alchemy Bar and Lounge at 16 Winchester Street.
