A SUSTAINABLE ‘pop-up’ house where people can learn about wall insulation, solar panels, heat pumps and wildlife-friendly gardens will come to Basingstoke town centre later this month to inspire people to make their homes and lifestyles greener.

From Wednesday, February 28 to Saturday, March 2, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Green Team will bring its low-carbon home to Porchester Square in Festival Place to show people how they can live in a more planet-friendly way.

Taking up residence from 11am until 7pm each day except Friday, when it finishes at 5pm, the team’s carbon-busting specialists will welcome visitors to their custom-built home and talk to them about making their lifestyles and gardens more sustainable.

This includes showing people different types of insulation and low-carbon technologies and explaining how they could reduce the amount of energy homes use or generate zero-emission electricity, as well as advising on topics such as greener travel and how to nurture gardens into havens for plants and wildlife.

Running alongside the pop-up house organisations will offer visitors free experiences throughout the four days including trials on electric bikes, workshops to build bug hotels and the opportunity to have broken items fixed without charge by experts at repair cafés.

Cabinet member for the climate and ecological emergency, Cllr Chris Tomblin, said: “There are plenty of ways you can make a difference and help to tackle climate change and protect nature, right from your own home.

“And, alongside reducing your emissions, the actions that you can take can also help you to save money on your energy bills, make the air we breathe cleaner, enjoy your garden in harmony with nature and cut your waste.

“So, whether you’re thinking about tweaking your lifestyle to make it more sustainable or considering larger carbon-cutting changes, book an appointment to visit our friendly Green Team’s home or just come down and talk to them to learn more about what you can do and the benefits for you and our planet too.”

Festival Place’s head of marketing, Emily Palmer, said: “Anything we can do to encourage people to make their lives and homes more environmentally friendly can only be a good thing.

"We're pleased to be able to host this event at Festival Place and we look forward to learning about what we can do to make our lives that bit greener.”

The borough council declared a climate emergency in 2019, which included an ambitious target to work with communities towards achieving a net zero carbon borough by December 2030, as well as declaring an ecological emergency in 2021.

Launched by the council last summer to help support action on its emergency declarations, the Green Team visits communities to offer residents free advice to cut their carbon emissions and adopt more sustainable lifestyles.
