TRIBUTES have been paid to a former mayor of Basingstoke who died in December.

Jack Evans, a former mayor, leader of the council and borough councillor, died on Wednesday, December 27.

Jack represented the ward of South Ham for 22 years, served as leader of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council from 1995 to 2000 and as mayor of the borough from 1986 to 1987.

Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Cllr David Leeks, said: “I know that many people will be saddened to hear of Jack’s death. He was considered a good mayor, a fair chairperson and a good leader of the council. Jack championed fundraising for Guide Dogs for the Blind during his service as mayor.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very sad time."

The flag at the council offices will be flown at half-mast on the day of Jack’s funeral on Thursday, February 1.
