FOUR people who were arrested from Basingstoke on suspicion of breaking into a van have been released on bail. 

Officers said the four have been released from police custody on conditional bail under April 23 while enquiries continue.

As previously reported, they were arrested following an alert from a Basingstoke resident who saw a gang trying to break into a van.

Police were called to the incident at 2.19am on Tuesday morning (January 23) in Southern Road in Basingstoke.

Officers who attended the scene searched the area and came across a vehicle that was being driven in London Road.

Following a pursuit along Old Common Road and the A30, the car left the road and officers were able to arrest four people who had been inside.

A 26-year-old man from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, was arrested on suspicion theft from a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink, and driving while unfit through drugs.

A 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, both from Salford, Greater Manchester, and a 15-year-old boy from Northampton, Northamptonshire, were arrested on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle.

All four were also arrested for a further offence of theft from a motor vehicle, which relates to a reported theft of tools from a van parked in Grosvenor Road, Aldershot, at around 12.20am on Tuesday morning (January 23).
