A food safety officer ranked the hotel on its handling of food, the cleanliness and condition of the building and facilities, and the management of food safety.

The hygienic handling of food, which can include preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage, was found to be generally satisfactory.

The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building, which includes appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control were also found to be generally satisfactory.

However, the food safety officer's confidence in the establishment, including checks to ensure food sold or served is safe to eat, and staff being knowledgeable about food safety, was found to need 'major improvement'.

This resulted in the overall hygiene rating of one, meaning 'major improvement is necessary'.

Basingstoke Country Hotel, which is part of Britannia Hotels, has various restaurants and a bar, as well as Spindles Health club and spa with a heated pool, spa, sauna and steam rooms.

It also hosts conferences and weddings with suites catering for up to 160 guests.

It has been contacted for a comment.

A spokesperson for Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council said: "We can confirm that Basingstoke Country Hotel was rated ‘one – major improvement necessary’ under the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme following an inspection on November 22, 2023.

"Our environmental health team is working with this business to ensure that the deficiencies found at the time of the inspection are rectified.
