AN ANIMAL rescue service in Basingstoke has been branded as being an "inspirational example" to the Basingstoke and Deane community.
Thanks to help from the public, Helping Dogs and Cats' (HDCUK) new community shop, which includes an animal foodbank, opened its doors on Saturday, October 7 in Feathers Lane in the town centre.
Founder Kirsty Wrightson said: "The opening day was really busy, we had a fabulous day I hope we managed to reach out to more customers. I am so proud of our team."
During the first day of opening £930 was raised, some of which will be used to help pay for a French Bulldog's ear surgery.
Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke, visited its new home following the opening.

Dame Maria said: "Kirsty Wrightson, founder of HDCUK is setting an inspiring example for the whole community. We are an animal-loving nation but too often families take on new pets only to find out they cannot cope and those pets face being abandoned or worse. Kirsty saw the problem and did something about it by setting up HDCUK which found foster placements and permanent adoption for pets who are no longer wanted by their owners.
“It is doing amazing work to help animals that need caring homes, and also helping owners who have financial difficulties keep their pets when there are unexpected vet bills."
