THE manager of a village pub that was previously given a one-star rating for its food hygiene has thanked the community for “standing by us”.

As previously reported, The Calleva Arms, in Silchester was given a one-star rating for its food hygiene after an inspector visited in July and said ‘major improvement’ was needed.

The pub, part of the Fuller’s group, which offers a menu including burgers, pies, and fish and chips, has since been re-inspected and its hygiene rating is now a four out of five. The new rating is yet to be published on the Food Standards Agency website.

Ashlie Bedwell, the new general manager of the pub, said: “We are thrilled to receive this rescore which is a true reflection of the hard work and dedication our team put into maintaining high standards across all areas of this business, especially food hygiene.

“We want to extend thanks to the wonderful community of Silchester who stood by us with unwavering support.”

The pub had declined to comment on the one-star hygiene inspection when it was told to improve the management of food safety and hygienic food handling.

The Calleva Arms has since been shortlisted for the Fuller’s Griffin Award, which Ashlie said the team is “incredibly excited” about.
