We were so sorry to learn that the M&S cafe in Chineham (Gazette, October 26) is to close at the end of November. This facility has offered a very friendly and welcoming service to its customers over the many years it has been open. From mums meeting with their babies and toddlers, older people enjoying a coffee and cake whilst shopping and people from across the communities of Basingstoke this has been a peaceful and enjoyable place of refreshment. The dozens of coloured-in pictures and messages from young children now adorning its walls show how much it will be missed.

Our thanks in particular to Tracey, Ben, Emma and Lindsey and their colleagues for providing such long-term exceptional service and making us all feel welcome. Fortunately, their jobs are secure but the community is the loser with this decision by M&S management which includes the closure of the store's customer toilets.
