A CARE home employee has celebrated completing a 25k run, carrying a heavy backpack, to raise money for a charity close to heart.

Marek Manteufel, who works at Marnel Lodge Care Home, in Popley Way, Basingstoke decided to raise money for Alzheimer's Society to support a number of residents living at the home with Alzheimer's.

To raise funds, Marek, who is the home's activities coordinator, ran 25k in one day on a treadmill at Marnel Lodge, carrying a heavy backpack, that colleagues struggled to pick up, to increase the intensity of the run.

Marek took around seven hours to complete the run, with a few breaks scattered throughout the challenge.

Residents and colleagues gathered for the final few kilometres, to support Marek as he completed the challenge.

So far, he has raised over £400 for Alzheimer's Society, with a number of contributions on Marek's JustGiving page and cash donations on the day as well.

Marek said: "We have a number of residents at the home here who sadly suffer from Alzheimer's, so we wanted to do something to support them and our community here at Marnel Lodge.

"The first few hours were good and I managed to get quite a good pace going as we got into the run. It was lovely to see all the residents and my colleagues come together for the last couple of kilometres. It was lots of fun and we're obviously thrilled we can raise some money for a fantastic charity and give a bit back to the community.

"Thanks to all the staff and the residents for their great support - it was great to see all the happy faces and hopefully we can do similar events going forward."

Donations can be made through Mareks JustGiving, which can be accessed here.
