VARIOUS seat prediction polls show that Basingstoke could see a historical result at the next general election if the Conservatives lose their seat for the first time in almost 100 years.

As previously reported, three seat prediction sites all show that the town could see its first-ever Labour MP elected in the next general election.

With the exception of 1923 to 1924 when Liberal Reginald Fletcher was voted in, the town has elected Conservative MPs since 1885, making it one of the party’s ‘safe seats’.

However, following boundary changes which have seen existing constituencies reshuffled under a review by the Independent Boundary Commission for England, the prediction sites suggest that Basingstoke’s current MP Maria Miller, who has represented the town in parliament since 2005, may lose her seat.

While a date for the next general election has not yet been set, it will be held before January 2025.
