A COMMUNITY library has launched a new collection of novels for people to enjoy.

Kingsclere Community Library launched its new collection of graphic novels on Saturday, September 9.

Graphic novels use sequential art to tell a story and are sometimes adapted from previously written work or they can be written specifically in this format. Graphic novels are generally longer, stand-alone stories with more complex plots than comic books.

Library chairperson Nicki Lee said: “It’s important to serve the entire community and this is a popular genre, especially among younger people. We are keen to encourage reading, of course, and these colourful, artistic books appeal to many people.

“We have also invested in some more recently released young adult books although a good young adult book may appeal to older readers, too, and anyone is very welcome to borrow them.”

Kingsclere Community Library became independent of the Hampshire County Council's library system when it withdrew funding and has been self-funded and staffed by volunteers since 2015. The library became a registered charity in 2021.

Its biggest fundraiser is a second-hand book sale, with thousands of donated books on offer at very low prices. This annual sale has proven very popular since it began in 2015. Last year, second-hand art was added to the sale, which continues this year.

The sale will take place on Saturday, September 16 from 9am to 4pm, and Sunday, September 17 from 10am to 3pm at the Fieldgate Centre in Kingsclere.
