A NUMBER of wards at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital were evacuated following a suspected gas leak.

The incident happened in the morning on Thursday, July 27 when several crews were called to the hospital in Basingstoke.

A spokesperson from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "Basingstoke, Winchester and Alton crews were called to North Hampshire Hospital due to a suspected gas leak at around half-three this morning which caused a number of wards to be evacuated. 

"No leaks were found as firefighters used specialist equipment to monitor the safety of the air. 

"The incident was handed over to hospital management as HIWFRS left the scene shortly after 6am."

Crews also took to Twitter to share the news with residents.

Basingstoke RDS posted: "03:32* H01P8 mobilised alongside H01P6, H01P7 and H01R1 also from @Basingstoke_01, @WinchesterStn30 with the DIM vehicle and @AltonFire05 with the Environmental Protection Unit to reports of a Hazmat in #Basingstoke. Persons evacuated of area and assessed by @SCAS999.

"No signs of any hazardous materials involved. Area fully searched by HIWFRS and @SCAS_HART using monitoring equipment. Many thanks to all agencies involved. @davegrahamS025 also in attendance as our Hazardous Material and Environmental Protection Advisor."

A spokesperson from Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “We can confirm that the local fire service attended our Basingstoke hospital on Wednesday evening with a small area of a single building evacuated for a short period as a precautionary measure.

“We have continued to deliver our normal level of patient care without issue throughout this period and this area has now reopened. All of our services continue to operate as normal.”
