Hopes of a second local bowler qualifying to represent Hampshire in the National Finals were dashed on Friday evening as Basingstoke Town’s Paula Haynes was defeated.

Haynes went up against Bournemouth Moordown’s Kim Taverner in the quarter-final of the County Women’s’ Singles.

Hopes of success in county team competitions have also diminished.

In the Men’s County Cup, Old Basing were beaten by Cove and Oakley went down to a last bowl defeat at Yateley, a feat that was replicated by their women, when, in the Women’s equivalent event, they too suffered a last bowl defeat at Pyestock.

With Basingstoke Town’s women also going out at this stage, the remaining hope for success is that the sole local survivor, Oakley, can continue to make progress in the County Mixed Top Club event.

The Basingstoke Triples League saw Champions Kingsclere depose Oakley at the top of Division 1 whilst in Division 2 unbeaten Basingstoke Town need only four points from their three remaining matches to guarantee promotion.

In Division 1 of the Rinks League Alton Social stormed to the top with an 87-34 (five points) win over Old Basing and are odds on favourites to be Champions. Basingstoke Town lead the way in Division 2 following a 71-36 (five points) victory at Alton Social “B”.

Results in the Whitchurch Mixed League were generally predictable with the leaders of all four divisions maintaining their top spots.

In Division 1, leaders Basingstoke Spades had a big win 75-33 (five points) win over Littleton Lemurs and in Division 2 Kingsclere Partridges beat second place Alton Social 66-33 (4 points).

Division 3 saw leaders Old Basing Roundheads restricted to four points in their 52-46  win over Hook Hares and in Division 4 Aldermaston Elms picked up four points against Alton “B”.

The Stan Hardman Mixed League will soon be moving to the position where the top two teams in each of the four areas meet in the knockout quarter finals.

Local teams from Basingstoke Town, Howard Park and Oakley occupy three of the top eight places and with Old Basing well placed there could be a strong local representation at the final stages.
