Firefighters tackled a blaze after a highway maintenance truck was set on fire in Rooksdown.

Police officers attended the scene shortly after.

Police say the cause of the fire, which took place on Friday, July 14 on the A339, is "suspicious."

A spokesperson from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service told the Gazette: "A crew from Basingstoke were called to a commercial van fire on the A339 near the junction with Rooksdown Lane in the early hours of Friday morning. 

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze using jets.

The burnt-out shell of the highway maintenance truck is all that remains, left on the A339 roadside with a 'Police Aware' notice.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: "We were called by HFRS to reports of a burnt-out vehicle on Rooksdown Lane.

"The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious."
