A GROUP of travellers have left a Basingstoke park after the council enforced an injunction against unauthorised encampments.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire County Council were granted an injunction by the High Court against unauthorised encampments in the wider Basingstoke area for five years from 2019. This includes Beggarwood Park.

The Gazette understands that the travellers arrived at Beggarwood park late in the evening on Monday, July 10.

Residents and councillors reported their presence at the park early on Tuesday, July 11, near to the children's play park and Beggarwood Community Centre.

It is thought that access was gained into the park from the access road alongside Hatch Warren Retail Park, as the gate had been opened and the height restriction bar moved.

The Gazette visited Beggarwood Park on July 12, at which point the group had moved on.

A spokesperson for Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council said: "Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire County Council were granted an injunction by the High Court against unauthorised encampments in the wider Basingstoke area, that includes Beggarwood Park, for five years from 2019.

"An unauthorised encampment was originally reported on July 10 at Beggarwood Park. Council officers visited the encampment, accompanied by the police, to advise the group that they are in breach of the injunction.  They moved on but are now at Brighton Hill Retail Park, which is also in the injunction area.

"We are working with the police to ensure that the encampment leaves as quickly as possible."
