THESE amazing photos show numerous vintage cars driving through Basingstoke as they complete the Ellis Journey.

Described as "A celebration of the first recorded motorised carriage journey in the UK", the re-enactment was set up by The British Motor Show.

The first documented car journey in the UK was made in 1895, by the Hon Evelyn Ellis and his passenger Fredrick Simms, it started near Winchester and finished at Ellis’s home in Datchet, near Windsor Castle.

This gallery, featuring 19 photos which were taken by Basingstoke Gazette Camera Club members Pam and Eric Denton, shows the vintage cars as they drove along the A30, passed the Hatch pub, on Sunday, July 2,  following the route from Micheldever to Datchet.

The annual re-enactment follows as near as possible the original route and is open to cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and bicycles manufactured before 1905.

The Ellis Journey re-enactment gave drivers and spectators the opportunity to dress in period costumes to drive their veteran vehicles on a summer's day through the English countryside.

Spectators witnessed a moving museum of pre-1905 vehicles, with the noises of very primitive engines passing through the countryside.

In the final stages of the route, the veteran vehicles drove alongside the River Thames and passed the site of The Hon Evelyn Ellis’s 1895 home 'Rosenau', and finished with a party on Datchet Village Green.
