A TEENAGER and a man have been released from police custody after a suspected hand grenade was found in Basingstoke.

The incident happened on Tuesday, June 27, when officers conducted a proactive vehicle stop on Western Way at around 12pm.

On searching the vehicle, a silver Renault, a possible hand grenade was located.

As a result, a road closure was put in place between St Andrews Road and Princes’ Crescent.

A bomb disposal squad was called to attend and assess its viability but it was deemed not to be a threat to public safety.

A 44-year-old man from Basingstoke was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified, driving under the influence of a drug, and possession of an offensive weapon.

A 17-year-old boy from Epsom was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon."

The Gazette asked Hampshire Constabulary for an update.

A spokesperson said: "The 17-year-old has been released from police custody but remains under investigation.

"The 44-year-old has been released from custody on police bail while our enquiries continue.
