Josh Buckingham hit a boundary strewn 104 off 62 balls as Hook & Newnham Basics chased down a Painswick total of 222-8 to win their Voneus Broadband national Village Cup fifth-round tie at the KGV by six wickets with more than 12 overs to spare, writes Mike Vimpany.

He plundered five sixes and 11 fours, sharing a hefty opening partnership of 184 with Harry Warner, who made a more sedate 84 (11 fours) as the Hampshire champions cruised to victory.

Hook became Hampshire winners for the first time after beating Ventnor in the county final and will now host another WEPL club, Goatacre on July 2 for a place in the national quarter-finals, writes Mike Vimpany.

Gloucestershire champions Painswick lost their first three wickets for only 23 and were still in trouble at 70-5 when Luke Woolway struck a century of his own, 125 including seven sixes and 11 fours to rescue the West of England Premier League visitors.

Aniket Divecha (2-17), Will Gardner (2-28) and Oli May did the early damage for Hook, who won the toss and fielded with uncertain weather about.

Reaching the last 16 of the Village Cup cushioned the disappointment of a 15-run defeat by SPL1 rivals Calmore Sports at Loperwood Park.

Calmore rallied from 117-5 (Ben Johns 38) to post 192, Max Bailey (36) at the forefront of the recovery despite Ollie May's 3-41 return.

Hook appeared well placed at 67-1 (Sam Lockwood 26), but lost three wickets for six runs before Matt Buckingham (44) drove them to 137-4, by which time Calmore had their four spinners in full swing, Mark Lavelle returning a miserly 3-13 off his ten overs.

Hampshire U15 prospect Alex Corbett had a fine SPL debut behind the stumps for Hook, scoring 28 after snapping up two stumpings and a catch behind the stumps.

He was eventually eighth out as Hook lost their last three wickets for one run and were 177 all out.  Liam Carty and Liam O'Connor took two wickets each.
