Hook & Newnham Basics will host Gloucestershire side Painswick in the opening national round of the Voneus Village Cup at the King George V ground on Sunday week, June 18, writes Mike Vimpany.

That’s the prize for a 20-run win over Ventnor, which saw Hook crowned Hampshire county village champions for a first time.

Painswick play in the WEPL Gloucestershire/Wiltshire feeder division and lie in mid-table after five completed matches.

A comfortable 51-1 (Sam Lockwood 25) at one point, Hook lost three quick wickets before a middle-order recovery led by Rupes Armstrong 25) and later Will Gardner (20) and Lewis Watts (18) lifted the total to 183 all out.

Ventnor, fielding only five first team players, sank to 11-3 before Zeph Wells (48) and Ben Woodhouse (34) hit back, closing the gap. Hook broke through again, but Ventnor refused to lie down and closed 165 all out, Gardner and Watts sharing six wickets.
