A fire has broken out in a block of flats, with smoke visible from across Basingstoke. 

On Saturday afternoon, May 27, emergency services were called to a fire at a block of flats in Oakridge. 

Hampshire Police, the fire service and the South Central Ambulance Service are all at the scene. 

Residents reported seeing smoke in Kempshott, more than five miles away.

Police urged residents to avoid the area to allow emergency services to work at the scene. 

A number of roads were closed including Oakridge Road, Stratfield Road, and Normanton Road. 

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: "Emergency services are in attendance at a fire at a block of flats in Oakridge Road.

"We have road closures in place in the area and would ask people to stay clear of this while we respond."

On Twitter, Basingstoke Cops added: "Emergency services are attending a fire at a block of flats in Oakridge Road.

"A number of road closures are in place while the fire service respond and we would ask people to stay away while this is ongoing.

"This includes Oakridge rd, Stratfield Rd, and Normanton Rd."
