A GROUP of young rugby players in Basingstoke are raising money to go on a tour and gain much-needed experience before embarking on their journey in the junior level.

Basingstoke Rugby Club's U12s are desperately seeking to raise around £9,000 to fulfil the kids' dream of embarking on a tour.

The squad, consisting of 28 players and five coaches, hopes to secure sponsorships from Basingstoke companies willing to have their names added to the players' shirts.

The team's aspiration is to go on a tour equipped with all the necessary kit and win as many games as possible, representing their town with pride.

Coach Ben Rees said the tour would be a crucial step for the players before transitioning into the junior level.

"Under-12s is their final year of mini's rugby. So, this is really important for team building, fostering relationships, and forming strong bonds that will carry them into their next significant phase," Ben said.

"We thought it's a great time to organise a tour. The main focus is ensuring they enjoy rugby, learn the sport, make friends, and engage in a game that hopefully they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

"Until now, it has all been non-competitive. The emphasis has been on involvement, learning the ethos of teamwork and respect, and above all, enjoying themselves. They gather on Sundays, play rugby, enjoy it, and make friends. However, starting next year, as they progress to the junior level, competitive elements come into play with league and cup matches."

Fi Donnison, one of the parents, expressed that sponsorship would mean a great deal to the players who are eager to embark on a tour.

She said: "We have to see how much money we can gather. The team's dream is to go on a tour. Any help is greatly appreciated."
