WHICH long-lost Basingstoke pub do you miss the most?

We asked this question on our Facebook page and received hundreds of responses.

From the Bass House to the Hole in the Wall, our readers have had their say about the pubs of yesteryear which are gone, but not forgotten.

One venue that our readers fondly remember is the Bass House.

Claire Michelle said: "The Bass House was the pre-partying place to go, whether it was Martines or an all-night rave."

Others preferred a different location.

Reuben Pegg responded: "The White Hart, Worting, when it was the good old days."

Keith Rowley agreed, saying: "It had a Bar Billiards table! I loved playing that."

And then there are those who couldn't get enough of them all - it sounds like Paul Andrew Evans had the best night's out.

He said: "On my Fridays and Saturdays I would go to the Bass House, then the Wine bar where Box is now and then to The George followed by Magnums and finally off to some rave in the woods after!"

It turns out he wasn't the only party animal.

Tony Reynolds admitted: "I was one of the main geezers at Martines during that time, strutting my funky stuff like I owned the place!"

The majority of readers preferred one venue above all the rest.

Scores of readers, including Roger Oram, Amy Pritchard and Jo Wilson simply said: "The George."

Also known as the Hole in the Wall, this was indeed a popular venue back in the day, and many had their reasons to love it.

George Lee said it was the "Best named pub."

Ian Fuller said: "The George when it was still known as 'the Hole in the Wall'.

Andy Durling said: "The Hole in the Wall. Saturday lunchtime tradition was hot dog sausage in a baguette with onions and tomato sauce, all washed down with a few courage bests, winner stays on at the pool table."

This once legendary Basingstoke pub, located at the top of town, has since been converted into a Zizzi's.
