THE borough council has asked families using Basingstoke’s splash pad to “limit their stay” because there are no toilet facilities.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council announced that the splash pad at Chineham Park, in Popley, would open on Friday, April 28 after being closed during the winter months, but warned the public that there are no toilet or changing facilities.

However, families criticised the council for failing to provide toilet facilities, questioning how a water attraction can open without toilets.

Last year, the water attraction was targeted by vandals twice who set fire to a portable toilet.

Now, the borough council is asking visitors to the splash pad to “limit their stay” and “be considerate of nearby residents” while it sources another replacement toilet.

Tom Payne, the borough council’s head of environment and communities, said: “We are really pleased that the splash pad at Chineham Park is now open for families to enjoy during the spring and summer.

“The council has, in the past, provided a portable toilet for visitors to the site to use. Unfortunately, two of these units were deliberately destroyed by fire in a matter of weeks last year at significant cost to the council.

“The council is in the process of sourcing another toilet facility for those young families who use this splash pad. In the meantime, we would ask people visiting the splash pad to be considerate of nearby residents and to limit their stay at the site while we replace the toilet. We are grateful for everyone’s patience.”
