Residents in Chineham are fuming at the 'disregard for the community' after a duvet was crammed into a public bin.

The bin, just outside of Chineham Retail Park, had the duvet stuffed into it on April 21 - and it was left hanging out of the bin.

Residents have been left upset - and say it shows a lack of respect for the community.

A passer-by said: "It's disgusting. The way they've left it shows how little they think of the community that will be walking through here and looking at the mess they have left. It's a public bin, and shouldn't be used so selfishly by some people!"

John Cassini, who is a resident in the area, said: "I think it's total laziness. People talk about keeping Britain tidy, but how are you going to do that when some people don't care at all.

"The people who tried to put the duvet in the bin should be embarrassed of themselves. Stop being so lazy and if you have something to get rid of, do it properly. It's a complete disregard for the community."

The council operates the public bins for general waste - however using a public bin to get rid of household waste can be classed as fly-tipping and may result in fines being issued and the removal of the bin.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Head of Environment and Community Services, Tom Payne, said: “Our street cleansing team has removed the duvet from the litter bin.

“We know that clean streets are important to our residents and we can all do our bit to help by ensuring that only litter, such as empty food packaging, is placed in public litter bins.

“For anyone unsure of how to dispose of their waste correctly, there is a useful guide on our website: basingstoke.gov.uk/a-z-waste-and-recycling.”
