SLIMMING groups in Basingstoke say they are thrilled after giving away their members' clothes that they have slimmed out of to raise money for charity.

Slimming World recently confirmed they had booked their collection driver, from Cancer Research, who collected bags of clothing on April 22 at War Memorial Park.

Since 2013, Slimming World members have donated over £18m worth of pre-loved items to Cancer Research UK shops thanks to this activity. Slimming World aims to raise desperately-needed funds for charity partners, as well as inspiring members and potential members by showcasing what can be achieved when you join a Slimming World group, getting rid of clothes they’ve slimmed out of for good.

The Mayor of Basingstoke, Cllr Paul Miller, and Mayoress Sandra Miller, were in attendance on the day.

Each bag, with gift aid, raises about £25, with the group taking over 100 bags to the Cancer Research shop in Alton last year. This year, Slimming World Chineham received 315 bags which amount to approximately £8,125 for Cancer Research Uk and with gift aid, in the region of £10,000.

A spokesperson for Slimming World Chineham said: "We are absolutely overjoyed by the response to the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw and we cannot wait to see what happens nationally.

"Individually for our members, the joy of realising how much they have achieved on their weight loss journeys and being able to put the clothes they have slimmed out of to a greater use. It can be a real light bulb, positive reinforcing, confidence-building moment. We as consultants feel really privileged to be a part of this."

Taking place from April 16 to April 29, the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw raises funds by encouraging members to donate the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to their local Cancer Research UK and Irish Cancer Society shops.

The groups involved included: three groups in Kempshott, two in Popley, two in Hook, two in Odiham and North Warnborough, plus ones in Oakley, Winklebury, Oakridge, Viables, Basingstoke town centre and Kingsclere, as well as two in Chineham.
