A BASINGSTOKE repair café has saved thousands of pounds worth of items going to landfill.

On Saturday, March 25, North Hampshire Repair Café held its most recent monthly meeting in Sherfield Village Hall.

The volunteer-led project aims to inform people how they can repair things themselves, rather than throwing them away.

In doing so they have helped 441 happy clients save more than £23,000 worth of items from going into landfill.

Simon, one of the volunteers, said: "We’ve been running for nearly a year and it has been brilliant. We’re having to move to larger venues to cope with the amount of friendly people wanting repairs and we’ve got lots more great volunteers repairing everything from clocks to pressure washers to cuddly toys.

"Just as importantly we’ve got a great reception team keeping track of everything and everyone and ensuring things keep going smoothly and the tea and coffee keep flowing."

So far they have prevented 698kg of waste and 3939kg of greenhouse gases.

The café has received great customer feedback, with people commending the team's patience.

The team thanked the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Paul Miller for his ongoing support, as well as initial funding from Hampshire County Council and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

They especially commended the public for their donations, which without they wouldn't be able to remain running financially.

The next meeting will be held in St John's Church in Hartley Wintney on Saturday, April 29.
