ELECTRIC car charging points and murals on street furniture in the town centre were two of the hot topics of discussion when primary school pupils got to meet their MP.

Park View Primary School hosted guest Basingstoke MP Maria Miller who gave a talk for the school's Parliament Week project.

After meeting a group of school pupil governors, Maria said: “Pupil governors want to play their part in making their school and Basingstoke a better and fairer place to live.

"They wanted to see more electric car charging points, to help the environment, and liked the new murals around town on street furniture that dissuades graffiti.”

During a full school assembly, Maria answered questions about her work in parliament, action needed to slow down the rising cost of living and balancing the need to protect the environment with building new homes.

Maria said: “Children know the health of our environment must be a priority and asked me about what can be done to better protect trees, to protect our local wildlife, and protect our environment. Questions on recycling and increasing the variety of items that we can recycle was also a hot topic”.

Speaking to teacher and parliament ambassador Kate Norman, Maria also learned more about the school's deaf sign language provision and buddy system for new pupils who don’t have English as their first language.
