A BASINGSTOKE man entered his ex-partner's home armed with a knife, set fire to it and stabbed her three times, a court has heard.

Kyle Butler, 28, from Cannon Close, Ellisfield, has gone on trial at Winchester Crown Court accused of attempted murder and wounding with intent.

As previously reported, officers were called to an address in Butler Close in Basingstoke at 6.34am on Friday, June 24, last year. They found a woman in her 20s with non-life-threatening injuries.

The court heard that he allegedly stabbed his ex-partner with a knife he had purchased. There were also young children in the home at the time of the incident.

Opening the case, prosecutor Kerry Maylin said: "Mr Butler entered [the property] Butler Close without an invitation, he made his way into the house and he made his way to her bedroom where she was sleeping. He woke her, he held a knife to her throat, he threatened to kill her and himself, he phoned his sister to collect the two children."

The court heard that when police arrived Butler had "barricaded" the entrance to the stairs with children's toys and had set fire to bedding.

Butler was found by officers holding a knife to the woman's neck.

Ms Maylin continued: "[Butler's ex-partner] did as she could to prevent the knife from being anything other than being held to her throat. She put her hand between the blade and her neck and grabbed the blade and in doing so received a substantial injury to her hand.

"The police officers in the premises with the smoke and the fire knew they had to act to disarm Kyle Butler. The fire that had been set continued to burn."

The court heard that Butler had set fire to bedding in the property.

Ms Maylin told the jury that as police attempted to disarm Butler he stabbed his ex-partner three times in her shoulder area.

She continued: "The prosecution do not know how Butler entered the property because there was no sign of forced entry. All of the doors were still locked but there was a lounge window that was open. [Butler's ex-partner] cannot be sure whether she had left that window open during the night.”

The trial continues.
