A FORMER Basingstoke bank is set to be transformed into 16 luxury apartments in the town centre.

CGI images from PMG Architecture show what the former HSBC bank in London Street will look like once the development is completed later this year.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council gave the go-ahead for the development in January 2022, after plans were submitted by Grandeur Properties Limited to change the upper storeys of the building and convert the ground floor, which used to be HSBC bank.

The developers were also given permission to create a new third floor.

Grandeur Properties said in its application that bringing the building back into use will “ensure its future maintenance”, adding: “The proposed development would provide benefits to the local community by contributing to the local housing stock in a sustainable location."

The development will include a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments across four floors.

The plans were approved despite concerns raised by Hampshire Constabulary.

Designing out crime officer, Stuart York, said: “Consideration should be given as to whether this is an appropriate use of this space.”

Mr York also raised concerns about the lack of parking.

He said: “This may lead to vehicles being inappropriately parked to the rear of the building, which may cause an obstruction to the highway."

However, the design does include space for 20 bicycles.

Paul Gallie, director of PMG Architecture which is assisting Grandeur Group to redevelop the empty building, said: "The street scene has been significantly improved to the benefit of the neighbouring properties and businesses.

"The mixed use provides an active frontage with a smart facade of crisp render, zinc and grey aluminium windows providing natural surveillance to the street below and re-using an empty building working with the police comments to reduce antisocial behaviour.

"The investment breathes much-needed life into the high street providing fresh, modern, sustainable homes within close walking distance of the train station, local parks, shopping and employment opportunities.

"Secure cycle storage is provided encouraging sustainable transportation around the town."

The apartments are being brought to the market by Jackson Wright Property and are described as being “ideal for first-time buyers, commuters and investors”.
