THERE has been a 'lot of interest' from the property sector to buy the AA headquarters building in Basingstoke which has been put on the market, the borough council has said.

As previously reported, Fanum House is for sale after the AA decided the 47-year-old building no longer meets its needs for a modern work environment.

The property is being jointly marketed by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC), as the freehold owner of the site, and the AA, which still holds a long lease on the property.

Due to its age, Fanum House no longer provides the modern and sustainable offices that the AA needs, especially as the company has upgraded technology to meet the demands of its customers in the digital age and has adopted a hybrid home-office working model.

The Gazette asked BDBC for an update on the building and the process of its sale.

A spokesperson from BDBC said: "Fanum House in Basingstoke is being jointly marketed by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, as the freehold owner of the site, and the AA, which still holds a long lease on the property.

"There has been a lot of interest from the property sector in the building and 7.8-acre site, including viewings, during the current marketing phase.

"The next stage will be for formal bids for the lease on the building and site to be submitted. Any offers received would then be reviewed to consider any suitable ones to take forward to the next stages of the process, before a final decision is made by the council and the AA.

"Due to its age, Fanum House no longer provides the modern and sustainable offices that the AA needs, especially as the company has upgraded technology to meet the demands of its customers in the digital age and has adopted a hybrid home-office working model. The AA has decided to take new offices in the borough. In view of the AA’s decision, the council is keen to explore how Fanum House could be part of the continuing regeneration of the area."

Cllr Simon Minas-Bound, the leader of the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BCBC) had previously said he would like to see the building turned into a university.
