Dan Brownlie’s Basingstoke Town did not want January to end after winning six games on the bounce during the month.

That superb sequence saw the club rocket to the top of the Isthmian League South Central Division with a goal difference of plus 37.

Tormentor in chief, Brad Wilson,  struck nine times in that spell to take his tally to an astonishing 23 goals from 22 appearances.

Wilson, who had a spell in Australia before returning home, said: “I am outdoing myself with every goal I score.

"I have to admit, this season hasn’t come as a surprise to me. Given we fell short last year, we knew what the aim was coming into this year. And the club have strengthened when we needed to.

“It’s still just over halfway so nobody here is getting carried away. All we can do is turn up every week, do our best, and carry on producing the performances we have done as of late."

Experienced former Woking forward Paul Hodges also arrived last week, having worked with Brownlie at Hartley Wintney.

Basingstoke’s bright young coach is delighted to have him on board and believes his talented group can maintain their momentum.

Brownlie said: “We’ve had a terrific first half of the season, but the best thing is that we’ve been getting stronger as the season progresses.

“We’re still learning a lot about players, but the early signs are great. The big thing is that they care.

“They care about performances, they care about results and they care about the club. We’ve come a long way in a short period of time.”

The team’s surge up the league has seen a surge in attendances with average home games topping the 500 mark.

Brownlie added: “I know the supporters are enjoying the moment, so we should never settle for anything less than giving everything."
