A NEW Christmas event has launched offering festive attractions including rides, live shows, ice skating and Santa’s grotto.

We were invited to the official launch of The Great Christmas Carnival at Newbury Racecourse, which is running until January 2.

The twinkling lights from the big wheel glistened in the darkness as we arrived at Newbury Racecourse on a particularly cold November evening.

With the attraction less than half-an-hour drive from Basingstoke, it may seem attractive for families wanting to enjoy a festive evening close to home.

Billed as the largest event of its kind in the south outside of London, the photographs on the website certainly make it appear magical and Christmassy.

Entry tickets only cost between £5 and £7.50, which includes a hot chocolate drink, free parking and the flying Santa attraction. However, once inside, almost everything else costs extra money.

There is plenty to keep the family entertained if you’re prepared to pay out. Attractions include rides costing between £3.50 for small children’s rides up to £8 for a go on the Greatest Hits Radio Big Wheel.

Ice skating starts at £10 per person, the Christmas tree maze starts at £5, Santa’s Grotto starts at £8 and circus tickets start at £12.50.

You can see how an evening out could add up for a family. However, organisers have offered an incentive to book in advance, giving 20 per cent off your booking for those who spend £25 per person.

We enjoyed a ride on the big wheel, admiring the views below and all the sparkling lights as festive tunes were pumped out.

My six-year-old thrill-seeking son was adamant he wanted a go on the rollercoaster, and I drew the short straw to accompany him. Just watching it spinning around made me feel nauseous!

But once we got going, I embraced the excitement of being spun and flung around the tracks with the cold wind in my face. My son, obviously, loved every second.

Next, we decided to give ice skating a go. Supports in the shape of penguins can be bought for an additional £3, offering younger children the option of sitting down and being pushed by an adult, or to use for support.

My son has never ice skated before and the small rink was the perfect place to give it a go. Ice skating is guaranteed to put you in the festive spirit, and we were both soon skating more confidently and enjoying the Christmas music.

After ice skating, it was time to enjoy a warm drink in the Alpine Bar. The delicious, mulled wine was my first of the year, while my son was delighted with his tasty hot chocolate accompanied by marshmallows and cream.

After an hour-and-a-half of entertainment we headed home, the event having made us all feel ready for the festive celebrations ahead.
