A BASINGSTOKE school is bringing back Covid measures for handwashing after a member of the school community tested positive for Strep A.

The case was reported at Marnel Junior School in Shetland Road, while Strep A bacteria infections continue to rise across the country.

At least eight children have died with an invasive form of the bacteria in recent weeks, while cases of scarlet fever, which is caused by Strep A infection, have skyrocketed.

The eighth death was confirmed in Hampshire on Tuesday, December 6. They attended Morelands Primary School in Crookhorn Lane, Waterlooville.

The Gazette has seen a letter sent by Marnel Junior School to parents and carers about the reported Strep A case.

Headteacher Tijhs Jordan confirmed in the letter that the school will stay open.

He wrote: “We know that you may find this concerning, but we are continuing to monitor the situation and as a precaution we have brought back our covid measures for hand washing.

“With this in mind, I would like to remind you all that school will not be closing, and all children must attend unless your child has any of the symptoms like high fever, severe muscle aches, localised muscle tenderness and redness at the site of a wound.”

The school also sent a Strep A guidance to parents and carers.

The headteacher offered no comments when the Gazette contacted the school.
