A MUCH beloved community lantern parade is returning to light up the streets of Whitchurch.

Organised by local volunteers, the event has had a hiatus due to Covid-19 pandemic, but will be back this year on December 3.

The parade will see local people gather at the Silk Mill and parade through the town to the Town Hall for the lights switch on at 6pm.

Local families are also invited to a free workshop on Saturday, November 26 at the Gill Nethercott Centre to make their stunning lanterns from wicker and creative material.

Previous years have seen fabulous efforts including bicycles and models of the Silk Mill itself.

This is a fantastic community event, supported by local fundraising and businesses to help bring some excitement to the start of the festive period.

Testbourne Community School and Whitchurch Scouts will also be hosting their annual Christmas Fair on November 26 at the school, with a wide range of stalls and activities.

Taking place the same day as the lantern-making workshop, it will give families twice the reason to spend time in the town.

December 3 and December 4 will also see the return of the Christmas market in the grounds of the Silk Mill.

With free entry, enjoy a glass of mulled wine with a selection of artisan crafts and local gift suppliers there will be lots of Christmas inspiration, alongside the Mill’s wonderful array of newly woven silk scarves and giftware.

There will be children’s activities in the middle floor of the mill and the chance to have a guided tour of the Mill on both days.

In addition, the neighbouring Gill Nethercott Centre will be joining in the festivities with a market on December 3, giving so many opportunities to get those Christmas presents sorted.

Visitor experience manager at Whitchurch Silk Mill Lisa Gale said: “It’s been great to work with our local volunteers and organisations this year to bring back some of the Christmas magic we have had in previous years.

“There will such a range of events and activities happening in the town, it’s never been more important to support the local economy and offer a fantastic experience for our residents and neighbours.”
