A BASINGSTOKE teenager is raising money to chase his goal of becoming an England hockey player.

Felix Crisford, a 15-year-old field hockey goalkeeper playing for Basingstoke Hockey Club, is raising funds to buy a complete set of pads designed to work together.

He believes the new gear would help him achieve his goal over the next year and get selected for the England Hockey Talent programme.

“It is the next step towards national representation,” Felix said.

“I am also participating in trials to play for Peter Symonds college, whose team has enjoyed success at a national level. Any support you can spare to help me achieve my dreams is greatly appreciated.”

Felix started his hockey journey when he was just five.

“From the first time I set foot on the pitch, I knew I had found the sport for me,” he said.

“Fast forward five years and my coaches convinced me to try being a goalkeeper. From that first try, I was hooked, and now there is nothing I would rather be doing.

“Since that first training session, I have worked hard; my effort has been rewarded. I have had the privilege of representing Basingstoke Hockey Club, playing for the adult section teams from the 6s to the 3s.”

However, Felix says his most significant achievement is being selected to play for Hampshire Hockey Academy as part of the England Hockey development programme for three of the last five years.

He currently plays in goal for Basingstoke under 16s and Academy teams, as well as playing for Hampshire.

Since 2019, he has also been part of the youth coaching ambassador programme.

He gives up his time twice a week to help aspiring young keepers.

One of the players he coached was selected for the county last year, which Felix says is his proudest moment so far.

However, playing in goal as a hockey player comes at a considerable expense.

“Until now, I have been fortunate in that my club and family have supported me,” Felix said.

“As I start the next chapter in my playing career, I would benefit from a complete set of pads designed to work together. The latest generation of pads from Obo offer unrivalled performance in terms of protection while still allowing me the agility I need to make those important saves.

“However, this comes at a considerable expense; the cost of a new set of pads can easily exceed £2,500.”
