BASINGSTOKE'S MP has reacted to recent advice saying that MPs can expense costs of Christmas parties to the taxpayers.

As previously reported, new advice from the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) says that MPs will be able to expense the costs of food and drinks for the party to taxpayers.

The IPSA confirmed that "MPs can claim the costs of food and refreshments for an office festive" in their parliamentary or constituency offices but warned, "no claims are allowed for alcohol".

As reported by the Daily Mail, the costs of "festive decorations for their office" can also be claimed.

MPs were told that any claims "should represent value for money, especially in the current economic climate".

MP for Basingstoke Dame Maria Miller said "The guidance on 'festive and celebratory claims' issued by Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority last week came as a complete surprise and has been universally unwelcome among MPs and their staff.

"It is unclear what prompted this review by IPSA, especially during the cost of living crisis.

"My team and I will have a Christmas get together and as in previous years I will meet the full costs to thank my team for all their hard work and support."
