PLANS for a ‘high quality redevelopment of a housing association’s former office building, including 43 apartments, have been unveiled.

The site, at Saxon Court located at the top of Sarum Hill, used to be occupied by Sovereign Housing Association but now proposals could see the out-dated 1970s building demolished.

The development, comprising of 43 one and two-bedroom apartments for shared ownership and affordable rent, will “provide much-needed affordable housing in the town centre”, Sovereign says.

The apartments will be contemporary in design and energy efficient, with plans to install photovoltaic panels across the development.

Each apartment will have its own balcony, providing a private amenity space, a secure cycle space and parking.

Sovereign says the scale and height of the new building will respect the existing aesthetics of the local area.

Now, neighbours and the wider community are being invited to have their say on the design proposals.

Land and planning director at Sovereign Steve Trenwith said: “We believe that everyone should live in a home they love and feel part of their community.

“Our plans will transform and modernise what is currently a disused building into 43 much-needed quality homes right in the heart of the town centre.

“Our vision for Saxon Court is to regenerate the site and create a flagship, high-quality residential development which helps to address the demand for more affordable housing in Basingstoke.”

A public consultation drop-in event will be held at Saxon Court on Tuesday, November 8 from 2pm to 7pm. This will provide an opportunity for local residents, businesses and stakeholders to view the proposals and meet with members of the project team.

The consultation closes at 11.59pm on November 21.

Feedback from the consultation will help to shape the design proposals.

Full details of the initial proposals can be found at sovereign.org.uk/developing-homes/saxon-court.

This is the second proposal put forward by Sovereign this year for apartments in Basingstoke. The housing association lodged an application to demolish retirement housing Malmesbury Fields and replace it with 21 new homes.
