PRIME Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation after just 45 days and the announcement was unexpected by Basingstoke residents. 

Ms Truss was voted in as PM on September 6 after succeeding former PM Boris Johnson who stepped down in July.

While the short length of her tenure might have shocked some of Ms Truss's supporters, the majority of Basingstoke's residents said they were happy to hear of her resignation.

One resident, Helen Daniel, said that she think's Ms Truss's resignation is "a good thing".

She continued: "She's struggled since the word go. I think they need to put in Rishi Sunak."

Michael O'Shea said that the resignation was "not unexpected".

He added: "Hopefully they will elect someone they can get behind, to give stability to the government and economy."

Christian Crosa said he was "shocked, but it was coming".

He added: "It was expected. It was going badly, but it was faster than expected."

Alan Sargeant told the Gazette that Ms Truss "wasn't up for the job" and "she has let us down".

He said: "I believed she was going to be an upgrade on Boris Johnson, but that wasn't the case."

Meanwhile, Bob Black said that he was not surprised by the news of Ms Truss's resignation.

Despite this, he is not optimistic that anything will change, he said: "I don't think it makes a difference who the prime minister is, as they won't call a general election."

Paul Carson said that he expected Ms Truss to step down and said she shouldn't have been selected in the first place.

Peter Richards called the resignation "the right thing to do" and stated his belief that "it was inevitable".

When asked about Ms Truss, Rebecca Morris said she is "glad to see the back of her," adding: "It's been a total shambles."
