A BASINGSTOKE previously rated 'outstanding' has now been criticised by inspectors and told that it must improve.

Merton Pre-school was previously given Ofsted's highest rating following a visit in October 2016 but has now been assessed as 'requires improvement.

Following an inspection on September 9, this year, Ofsted inspectors published a report that detailed that the pre-school in Romsey Close was rated 'requires improvement' for personal development and leadership and management.

It received a 'good' rating in both quality of education and behaviour and attitudes.

Inspectors said that while leaders do complete suitability checks for those working directly with children, current procedures for checking the suitability of those on the pre-school committee were described as not effective, therefore limiting the impact on children's safety and wellbeing.

Ofsted said that the provider does not fully understand its role and therefore does not carry out the requirements of their role effectively. For example, they fail to ensure all pre-school committee members are suitable, which poses a risk to children's welfare.

Nevertheless, children at the pre-school were noted as confidently entering the pre-school and excitedly exploring the wide variety of experiences, both indoors and outdoors.

Merton Pre-School was also described as having a strong partnerships with parents, that they enjoy attending open days and feel their children have made good progress in their development since attending the pre-school.

Larissa James, chair of Merton Pre-School, said: “Given our previous rating of outstanding, we are understandably disappointed by this latest outcome. We were, however, pleased to note the inspector’s findings that children are confident and progressing well; the curriculum is tailored to children’s needs; and leaders are approachable and promote a positive, open and honest safeguarding culture.

“We are determined to rapidly turn around the current rating and have provided Ofsted with up-to-date information regarding our committee, therefore actioning the requirement highlighted in the report. As always, we are working closely alongside the local authority and are continuing to keep parents informed about the necessary steps that have been taken. I’d like to thank all of our families for their continued support.”
