A BASINGSTOKE man has raised more than £800 for a palliative care centre in India by organising a charity run.

Subash Krishnan organised the run in memory of his mother, who died from breast cancer in 2019.

Taking place on Sunday, October 2 as part of the Virtual London Marathon, Subash was joined by friends from across the world, including ones in Dubai, Germany and California, who also ran or walked long distances in an effort to raise money and spread awareness.

Subash said: “One of the unique things that I see with the charity walk and run that we did is, usually you’ll have one person or a couple of people doing a big event and then others, friends and family, chip in with financial contributions.

“But the whole intent of what we did was that, apart from chipping in with the financial contribution, we wanted our friends to join in from wherever they are.”

In total Subash and the other fundraisers raised £830, all of which is going to the Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust.

Subash said that he was happy to have completed the marathon and raised the money.

Subash wanted to thank those who helped raise the money, saying: “I shared this fundraiser out last Friday (September 30), just a couple days before the actual run.

“But people were very generous.

“In the grand scheme of things, I don’t know how it looks in terms of the amount, but from what we were targeting, which was £200, we made more than £800 which will make a big difference to the charity.

“A big thank you to all of those who assisted financially as well as joining on the day.

“Because if you look at all of the global circumstances, there were people who were walking in scorching sun, while in the UK rain was pouring down.

“So really a big, big thank you to all of them for remembering my mum and spreading the message about breast cancer and palliative care services.”

The Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust is a medical clinic based in Chennai in India.

Established more than 20 years ago, the clinic aims to improve the quality of life in patients with chronic diseases like cancer from the time of diagnosis, during treatment and in advanced stages.
