THE clock at Basingstoke train station has finally been fixed after years of showing the wrong time.

The clock at the town’s train station was displaying the incorrect time for many years, despite being reported repeatedly to South Western Railway (SWR) by frustrated passengers.

The company previously explained that the clock is “exceptionally difficult to access” which made maintenance problematic over the years.

Since the clock stopped, SWR has been working with Network Rail to explore a safe way to inspect it and properly assess its condition.

Now, it has been announced that a solution has finally been found.

Network Rail explained that the clock is accessed via a route which runs along the station canopy next to the railway tracks.

The company needs to build a walkway to allow easier access, but in the meantime Network Rail and SWR arranged for the clock to be serviced by one of the few companies left doing this type of work.

The clock was lifted down from the tower with a cherry picker and taken away to be worked on for 13 weeks.

It is now back in place and telling the correct time.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: “We’re working on designs for the walkway at the moment so in future it won’t take such a dramatic intervention to get the clock serviced.”
